A critical overview of the basic factors of the psychology of pharmacotherapy is presented. These factors lower efficacy of therapy. Compliance and coping are demonstrating as the determining elements of the success. Two reasons of the refusing drug therapy are stressed. First, a patient’s relation to side-effects, both occurring and expected, (due to the frightening warnings in the ‘Instructions for patients’ attached to all medicines. Second, relation of a patient to the expected therapeutic effect. The role of the negative and positive placebo effects is shown.
Patient’s family is an important factor in emphasized. The role of patient-doctor relationships and relation of a patient to drug therapy is shown. A dominating importance of superstitions, fabrications, delusions and mistaking in the personality traits is shown. This book is of special interest for practicing doctors of all professions as well as for patients and their relatives. 50 references.
